Abstract

Communicating bad news is a skill that is rarely trained in medical training, however, in situations such as caring for critical patients, it is common to communicate bad news without knowing if we are actually doing it correctly. The critical patient who needs to know his diagnosis, current condition and prognosis can present in the pre-hospital setting, emergency room, perioperative or Intensive Care Unit.
Knowing tools to perform this skill is important, since how we inform the patient, family member or caregiver can impact positively or negatively on the decision-making of the patient’s therapeutic plan.

La comunicación de malas noticias es una habilidad poco entrenada en la formación médica, sin embargo, en situaciones como la atención de pacientes críticos, es común el comunicar malas noticias, sin saber si en realidad lo hacemos correctamente. El paciente crítico con necesidad de conocer su
diagnóstico, condición actual y pronóstico puede presentarse en el ámbito prehospitalario, sala de emergencias, perioperatorio o Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos.
Conocer herramientas para realizar esta habilidad es importante, ya que el cómo informemos al paciente, familiar o cuidador puede impactar de forma positiva o negativa en la toma de decisiones del plan terapéutico del enfermo.
